Keswa, Arabic for covering, is a piece of public art produced through the Christo and Jeane-Claude Award in collaboration with ADMAF and NYU Abu Dhabi. Emily Baker was the faculty mentor for two students who won the award and undertook both design and fabrication of the piece. Crafted of folded steel, the team developed a language of stitching within the joint details of digital steel fabrication. Keswa allows people of all ages, ethnicities and genders to enter the space of the abaya, or traditional covering, both venerating the garment and subverting its power to subordinate.
